Death-Associated Protein Kinase is Underexpressed in High-Grade Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma International Journal of Morphology
Meneses,Ismário Silva de; Souza,Rafael Reis de; Jeraldo,Verónica de Lourdes Sierpe; Cavalcante,Danielle Rodrigues Ribeiro; Reis,Francisco Prado; Albuquerque Júnior,Ricardo Luiz Cavalcanti de.
An immunohistochemical analysis of 40 cases of oral squamous cell carcinoma was performed to evaluate the relationship between the expression pattern of death-associated protein kinase (DAPk) positive cells with the histological malignancy grading of these lesions. According to our results, eleven cases (27.5%) were high-grade malignancy tumours and 29 (72.5%) were low-grade ones. We found that 92.86% of the low-grade tumours were positive to anti-DAP kinase antibody whereas only 7.14% of the high-grade tumours presented positivity, and this difference was statistically significant (p<0.01). Sixteen (55.2%) of the low-grade carcinomas exhibited moderate immunoreactivity whereas ten cases (34.5%) showed weak staining and three cases (10.3%) were negative...

Low prevalence of high risk human papillomavirus in normal oral mucosa by hybrid capture 2 BJM
González-Losa,Maria del Refugio; Manzano-Cabrera,Luis; Rueda-Gordillo,Florencio; Hernández-Solís,Sandra E.; Puerto-Solís,Marylin.
High risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV) are recognized as a necessary factor to development cervical cancer. During the last decade many studies have found HR-HPV in oral squamous cell carcinoma (OSCC) and normal oral mucosa, however the association between HR-HPV and OSCC is still uncertain. The aim of the study was to determine DNA HR-HPV in normal oral cavity of healthy adults. A cross-sectional study was performed; samples from 77 patients with normal oral cavity were collected at the Dentistry school, Autonomous University of Yucatan, Merida, Yucatan, México. HR-HPV was detected by hybrid capture 2. One sample out of 77(1.2%) was positive for HR-PVH. It was from a man of 50 years old. HR-HPV is present in low rate among healthy oral mucosa. Hybrid...

Morphometric Analysis of Nucleus and Nucleolar Organizer Regions (NORs) in Tongue Squamous Cell Carcinoma (SCC) International Journal of Morphology
Padovani,J. A. Jr.; Monteiro,R.; Zan,T.; Azoubel,R.; De Santi,D.; Taboga,S; Martins,A.
The tongue is one of the most likely places for the primary squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) to arise in the western world. This work intends to do a morphometric evaluation of the cellular nucleus, as well as a morphometric analysis of the nucleolar organizer regions (NORs). The biopsy specimen was removed from patients with tongue SCC, staged T2N0M0, before they underwent treatment. They were, then, subject to hemiglossectomy and supraomohyoid neck dissection (SOHND) and presented different clinical evolution. According to that, they were subdivided in three groups: Group A, control group, formed by patients without tongue neoplasm (the histopathologic specimen was obtained from the Department of Pathology at Hospital de Base and Faculdade de Medicina de Sao...

Oral and Oropharyngeal Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Our Population: The Clinic-Pathological and Morphological Description of 153 Cases International Journal of Morphology
Agarwal,A. K; Sethi,Ashwani; Sareen,Deepika; Dhingra,Shruti.
Oral cavity and oropharynx are one of the commonest sites for cancers in our population due to a high prevalence of tobacco use, especially chewing, in our country. The objective of this study was to prospectively assess the clinico-pathological and morphological aspects of the patients presenting to us with these malignancies. We studied 153 patients with oral and oropharyngeal squamous cell carcinoma who were managed in the department of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery between January 2006 and December 2007 at Maulana Azad Medical College and associated hospitals in New Delhi. There were 127 male patients (83%) and 26 females (17%) with ages ranging from 22 years to 70 years. One hundred and eleven patients (73%) presented with oral cavity and...

p16 (INK4a) has clinicopathological and prognostic impact on oropharynx and larynx squamous cell carcinoma BJMBR
Silva,S.D.; Nonogaki,S.; Soares,F.A.; Kowalski,L.P..
CDKN2A encodes proteins such as p16 (INK4a), which negatively regulate the cell-cycle. Molecular genetic studies have revealed that deletions in CDKN2A occur frequently in cancer. Although p16 (INK4a) may be involved in tumor progression, the clinical impact and prognostic implications in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) are controversial. The objective of this study was to evaluate the frequency of the immunohistochemical expression of p16 (INK4a) in 40 oropharynx and 35 larynx from HNSCC patients treated in a single institution and followed-up at least for 10 years in order to explore potential associations with clinicopathological outcomes and prognostic implications. Forty cases (53.3%) were positive for p16 (INK4a) and this expression was...

Radiation therapy for advanced canine nasal planum squamous cell carcinoma: case report Arq. Bras. Med. Vet. Zootec.
Cunha,S.C.S.; André,M.M.; Corgozinho,K.B.; Silva,K.V.G.C.; Silva,C.A.; Ferreira,A.M.R..
ABSTRACT This case report describes the outcome of treatment of dogs with advanced (deeply invasive) nasal planum squamous cell carcinomas with palliative or definitive radiation therapy. All dogs were diagnosed with nasal planum squamous cell carcinoma by histopathology, and their owners declined aggressive surgery. Dogs were treated with a cobalt-60 unit, definitive-intent radiation protocol consisting of 15 daily fractions (Monday-Friday) of 2.8 Gy, and palliative radiation protocol consisting of 4 fractions of 8 Gy performed once a week. Three dogs had T3 tumors and three had T4 tumors according to the WHO staging system. Two dogs had tumor complete remission and four had tumor partial remission. Survival time of dogs submitted to radiation therapy was...

In this report,a canine carcinoma was so far successfully treated by CUL treatment, an injection of suspention of an anti-cancer drug and contrast medium directly into the tumor. A nine-year-old spayed female golden retriever was brought to us with the main complaint of a mass in the oral cavity. The cytodiagnosis of the tumor was a squamous cell carcinoma. After palliative surgical resection of the mass, the dog was treated with intratumoral administration of cisplatin. The release of cisplatin was slowed by mixing it with poppyseed oil ethylesteres iodide (CUL treatment). After the CUL treatment was started, there was little growth of the twnor and no systemic side effects. A good QOL was maintained for 24 months after discovery of the mass. This case...
